Jeopardy! contestants draw blanks when it comes to hockey in Arizona

Well, it ain’t Bagdad, Arizona.
For $1,000 under the category “The minor leagues,” Jeopardy! contestants were challenged Thursday night to name the city of the minor league hockey team in Arizona.
“Hockey is blooming in Arizona — an NHL team in Phoenix & since 2016, the AHL Roadrunners in this city,” said host Alex Trebek, only to be answered by silence.

JaVale McGee Isn’t The Court Jester Anymore, But He’s Still The King Of Goaltending
Thursday December 13, 2018

JaVale McGee has gone a long way toward shedding the persona he got from “Shaqtin’ a Fool,” the TV blooper segment on which he held residency for years. Coming off consecutive NBA titles with Golden State, the 7-footer is currently logging career highs in points and blocks per game with the Lakers while serving as […]

See How Our Pitcher Ratings Have Changed Since Opening Day

One of the cool features in our MLB predictions model at FiveThirtyEight is its ability to adjust a team’s odds of winning any given game based on the strength of its starting pitcher. While we’re here, let’s get a little nitpicky with the Jeopardy! fact-finding folks.
Technically, the NHL squad isn’t in Phoenix. If you don’t believe that, just check the team’s Twitter bio.

Jared Dudley: Monty Williams ‘would be big-time’ hire for Suns
Wednesday May 01, 2019

The theme of the Phoenix Suns’ last three permanent head coaching hires has been inexperience. Jeff Hornacek, Earl Watson and Igor Kokoskov all had no prior experience as head coaches in the NBA and all three failed in Phoenix. That, along with the Suns’ current situation, seemingly makes that the X-factor in the team’s search […]

Yes, the Arizona Coyotes were previously the Phoenix Coyotes, but they play in Glendale. That might have led to this imprecise question — but it’s an opportunity to remind the Jeopardy! question creators to be a little more careful either way.
Anyway, Arizonans can appreciate Trebek holding back his concern and disgust for these contestants.
